Colon Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colon Cancer Awareness month, which is a great opportunity for us to bring attention to the important role screening colonoscopies play in the prevention of colon cancer. While not frequently talked about, colon cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in both men and women.

The good news is, colon cancer can be detected early and is even preventable with regular and early screenings. Today a colonoscopy is considered to be the standard preventative care for colon cancer screening. This procedure, performed by a physician in an outpatient setting, provides a high level of accuracy in detecting early signs of colon cancer. In fact, the majority of colon cancers arise from polyps, which when found during a screening colonoscopy are removed before they potentially turn into cancer. For that reason alone the importance of getting screened is significant. Since 1992, there have been over 1 million colon cancer survivors due to the increase in awareness and prevention.

While colon cancer deaths are decreasing there is still cause for concern. You may ask yourself if there is anything you can you do to lower your risk of colon cancer. The answer is yes! In fact, colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and there are a number of things that may prevent its occurrence, including:

• Eat a well-balanced, low-fat diet.
• Exercise regularly.
• Don’t smoke. Smokers have a 30%-40% higher risk than non smokers.
• Limit alcohol intake.
• Know your family history.
• Get screened! Screenings are the most effective way to prevent colon cancer.

Age is the single most important risk factor for the disease therefore people who live a healthy lifestyle can still develop polyps and cancer. To account for this risk factor, screening guidelines recommend that, beginning at age 50, men and women at average risk should have a screening colonoscopy. It is also important if you have a family history of colon cancer, to speak with your doctor and start your screenings before the age of 50.

It’s not something we enjoy talking about- but we can help save lives by spreading the word. That’s why Texas Health Rockwall is on a roll to wipe out Colon Cancer. So, in honor of Colon Cancer Awareness Month make an appointment and get screened today!

Texas Health Rockwall offers quality care, just minutes away! If you are in need of a physician or would like more information about the hospital, please visit our website at www.texashealthrockwall.com.
